What a sweet story these two share. With only a couple weeks to spend together while Gabe was on leave, he and Patricia were wed in a quiet ceremony. Patricia's mom wanted this newly wed couple to at least have some nice photos for themselves so she contacted us. We only had a very small window of time before Gabe left to squeeze in a quick couple's shoot, but thankfully the weather was more than cooperative. This time of year is always tricky because of the small time-frame of really nice lighting, but we got some really great shots! Here's a sample :)

Brittany's Sr Photos

Brittany and her friend Tara wanted to shoot their Senior photos this past month since the weather was absolutely beautiful. We met out in Olathe on a day that was pretty but really quite windy for January. We began the shoot with Brittany and traded off and on between the two girls, getting quite a few with them both. Here are Brittany's photos. The first one posted here we absolutely adore: it is of her and her niece. . . who happens to be the daughter of Danielle & Kevin!! That's right, Brittany is Danielle's sister and we had the great fortune of photographing Danielle and Kevin's wedding and their maternity shoot last December. What a great reunion!

Quinceañera fun!

We were asked to help out with a Quinceañera a couple weeks ago and we were happy to oblige. Having never done one before, we were blown away by the complexity and the amount of time spent planning the event and the party after. Reina & Fernanda are half sisters who both turn 15 this year and so had a joint Quinceañera. There were lots and LOTS of fun and interesting teenagers present and it made for a truly unique occasion. Congrats to these girls and their families!

A's 1-year old Birthday Party

A turned one this month! We were invited to her party and also to take some photographs, of course, and it was such a fun time! Jennifer really decked the place out for her & Jeremy's little daughter and little A was all smiles as she ran around in her pink tutu. From candy to games and family to eating (and painting with) cake, it was a fabulous Saturday in January!

We have a lot of requests for reception photography. It's a trend we've seen grow over the past couple years as couples have either gone out of the country for their wedding or they've opted for small or courthouse weddings and have had larger reception instead. So, we always ask the couples we meet with what they look for in a reception photographer? There aren't usually very many big, group photos, there really isn't much even in bridal portraits or couple shoots-- although we usually take some anyway before the reception :)

In fact, we had a reception we photographed just this past weekend (photos to come) and we had a consultation for reception photography just the other day.

So what do brides look for in reception photography? The overwhelming answer? It's a style that we like to call Candid Portraiture. "People having fun!" is what we hear a lot. "People don't stand in a straight line, we want real pictures, real people. . . "

Well, since that's what we do best, we thought to post a tribute to the Candid Portrait.

We met Dani & Kevin early last spring for their beautiful Orchard wedding. Now, we got to hang out with them on a chilly December afternoon for their maternity pictures. Heritage Park was the perfect setting for this outdoors-loving couple and the silo where we ended the shoot was reminiscent of the silo by which we took some wedding shots. All in all, it'll be a very happy holiday for this loving couple. Congrats!!

Out with the Camera

We had a maternity shoot not too long ago and while I don't have those images up yet, I did go around and take a bunch at the park since I had my camera with me. Yes, the shoot was at Heritage Park in Olathe and yes, it was quite chilly out. But the couple was Danielle and Kevin who's beautiful orchard wedding I had the privilege of photographing much earlier this season. ReDonda & John

ReDonda & John are the last couple who's wedding we have the honor of photographing for 2011. Despite running a bit late and an early sunset, we managed to get some great shots. ReDonda was a beautiful bride and the tears in John's eyes when he saw his bride walking down the isle was testimony to the love these two have for each other. The ceremony was heartfelt with fervent prayer and a sense of true love for this couple permeated the entire ceremony from beginning to end. Congrats to ReDonda & John!

Erin + Blake

These two animal lovers met us out at the Plaza on Halloween for their engagement session. Blake proposed to her by the JC Nichol's Fountain so that's where we began. No spooky tricks here, these two are very much in love and it shows even if they are a "house divided" ;) From the Plaza, we ventured out to Loose Park and got some nice fall photos and even saw some kids dressed up for trick or treating. What a great ending to a great October. Can't wait for these two's June wedding!

But it was good afternoon and evening as Regina and Bruce's families filled the room and later the Holiday Inn. Courtney & Josh's fall wedding

Josh & Courtney had a beautiful fall day to be wed in East Johnson County. We broke out the whole 2-photographer, 2-filmer team and the lovely and talented Liesl & Rachel joined us to cover this wedding with aplomb. This was a particularly special wedding for us because we were friends with Courtney's cousin and are good friends with the Pastor Tom, who married them. It was a wonderful ceremony and then we drove out to the Plaza for some great sunset photos. The reception was at the always fabulous Muelbach Tower and their DJ was a hoot! This was one of the best rounds of The Newlywed Game we've seen. It helps, too, that the groom was wearing cowboy boots. . . All in all, it was a fabulous day!

Emma & Steve's Loose Park Engagement session

It was an absolutely gorgeous evening when we met Emma & Steve out at Loose Park and from there we traveled to the Plaza. They were kind enough to push their engagement session up to 5p instead of 5:30 and we were so grateful because the lighting was phenomenal! They were such a funny, great couple. The sweet story of Erin & Kyle began years ago when they first met. Boy liked girl. Girl didn't really want to date boy. Boy and girl met years later in Denver by happy coincidence and there, they had a second chance and fell in love. They were wed on a beautiful Saturday in September at Kyle's parents's RV park in North West Missouri. Together with their baby daughter, family & friends, they were wed next to a serene pond by a family friend and then they celebrated into the night. Megan & Rob's Wedding Extravaganza!

Megan & Rob were wed at St Peter's Catholic Church last week and it was a grand time and great party. Megan and Rob were such a great couple and their church was so beautiful it was impossible not to take a single fabulous photograph. Barb and Shannon tag-teamed the full mass and then onto Californo's for a party that lasted well into the night. Megan cut some of the traditions out to make way for more partying and more dancing. However, there were still some great moments when Megan's brother and Rob's sister gave toasts and there was barely a dry eye in the house when Megan toasted her four brothers. It was such a privilege to be able to tell the story of Megan & Rob and we give them all our best!

Rachel didn't really ask for any pictures, but she was along with Kayte's shoot and she was so helpful. . . showing us this really great off-trail path and being goofy enough to make Kayte laugh. Never Too Late for "Sr Photographs"

Today was proof that it's never too late for "Senior Picutres." We'll call these photos Kayte's back-to-college photographs. Kayte never had her senior pictures taken so we told her it was high time! We spent a lovely evening at Shawnee Mission Park taking some truely unique senior pictures. Kayte is a fabulous young woman who loves to have FUN! Whether it's tromping through the underbrush in two-inch wedges or playing in the lake, she was a trooper and such a pleasure to photograph!

Wine time

We here at Artistic Imagery LOVE helping out small, local businesses. So when we had an opportunity to help out a couple local wineries before their big Oktoberfest shindigs and wine stomping parties geared up, we jumped at the opportunity. It was not only fun to roam the vineyards and take photographs of the grapes and wineries, it was also neat to learn about the history of these places. Kansas isn't exactly known for wine-- we've been told that while Missouri has an entire department of their DoA just for winery promotion, Kansas has no such thing. So, we headed out to Stone Pillar Winery in Olathe and Blue Jacket Crossing out in Eudora for a fun day full of history and viticulture. We can't wait until the Harvest weekends when we'll get some great video and photography of the actual harvest and crushing of the grapes!

Beyer family pictures part 2!

We met the Beyer family out in Ottawa, KS for some family pictures! Harmonie & Jason's son (the youngest Beyer grandson) had just turned one so that meant it was family picture time! So we drove out to Ottawa and met the family on the Beyer property and got some real nice evening shots outside.

After the sun set, we moved inside. . .

And Harmonie's mom joined us for a shot with her grandson. They had matching Chief's tee-shirts.

Look at that little man! Little E. took his photo shoot oh so seriously.

Tracy's Bridal photos

Tracy's bridal portrait session took place this past spring but we waited to post the blog until after her wedding (naturally!). We began at Union Station for some soft, romantic shots. Then we moved to midtown for some edgier, fashionista type shots. Tracy was a trooper along with her mom and two sisters. We loved that she was up for some of the craziest ideas!

For this next shot, Tracy really wanted some detail images of the ruffles in her skirt. We utilized the setting sunlight to capture the merangue-like waves.

Tracy saw a shot like this one in a magazine and brought it as something she wanted to duplicate. Very interesting.

This was the very last shot we captured that evening and it wasn't posed so much as grabbed as Tracy was getting up from her spot on the blanket. We just love sunsets. And brick. And cool wind-blown hair-I-am-a-model shots. Plus, we love love love the detail on her dress. Stunning! Congrats, Tracy! Your wedding was beautiful!

Devra and Chris's wedding at St Elizabeth's & The Cadallac Room

Chris & Devra are one of the sweetest couples we've ever had the pleasure of working for. Their wedding day was fantastic! Full of family, tradition and some great dancing, it's always so wonderful to spend the day with a great group of people. Barb met Austen & Erin at Kauffman gardens for their engagement shoot and it sure was warm outside. Thankfully, the weather wasn't the 101 degrees it had been, but low 90s is still pretty warm. We got some really nice pictures at the gardens and then headed down to the River Market to get our urban shots. Austen & Erin are being wed this December in Austen's home town. I'm sure they'll have a blast. Congrats you two!

The wedding of John & Jessica

Jessica & John were wed in one of the most laid-back Catholic churches we've ever had the pleasure of photographing & filming in. When we spoke with the priest after the rehearsal Friday night, we walked away very pleased and surprised. "I love photographs!" He said. "Whatever makes for the best picture." That was all we needed to hear. We have a policy of being absolutely discreet during the ceremony anyway, but it's nice to be discreet on our own terms instead of being told where we can and can't go and do. So we had the freedom to get some really nice shots of Jess & John during their Mass as well as afterward at the park & Downtown Overland Park. Here's a sampling from that blistering day.

So as a side note, this next picture Barb cropped down to be a self-portrait. Caught her reflection in the glass in a photograph. How fun! Thought we'd post it even though we didin't include it on the bride & groom's CD. Who wants a picture of their photographer?

the Locke's photo shoot

Barb met the Locke family out in down town Leavenworth. We must say, it's actually quite neat with lots of old buildings and fun little nooks and crannies in which to capture some great images. A.'s 6-month picture shoot

We met the Triplet family at Loose Park on a slightly overcast July morning to capture their precious daughter's 6-month photos. We've had the honor of photographing A. before she was born and then only 3 weeks after. Boy, what a difference 6-months make! And look at those clear blue eyes! She was beautiful and lively with a quick smile and a great laugh. What a lovely little girl she is!

Changnon Reception

Laura & Nick were wed in the Caribbean this past spring but decided they wanted a reception here in KC. Laura called us a couple months ago and set things in motion. When Barb arrived, Laura said that she wanted coverage of the reception, sure, but what she was really missing were some "getting ready" photos & some good "hang on the wall" photographs of her & her plus Nick. We took on the challenge and made some really fabulous images in the short time we were there.

Impromptu Trip

It's always sad when a couple cancels a wedding. It's one of the worst things we hear when a bride emails or calls to say that a wedding has been called off. This doesn't happen incredibly often but every once in a great while, it does. Fourth of July weekend held such a wedding for us. And then since we suddenly had a weekend in the middle of Wedding Season open (incredible!) we decided to take a little weekend getaway trip with us and two friends of ours (one of whom happens to be second shooter for us). What follows is a little glimpse into our journey across Missouri. It's astounding how beautiful and green Missouri is! We traveled along the Katy Trail (for those who are familiar with it) and in the beginning, we meant to camp. However, the daytime highs of 90+ degrees changed our plans to a quaint little B&B. All in all, it was a fabulous little vacation so we thought to post some pictures. Enjoy!

Matt & Nicole's Downtown Wedding

Matt & Nicole were wed at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in down town KC (the beautiful gold-topped church!). Their reception was in the historic Muehlebach Tower in the Convention district just blocks away from their church. Let's begin by saying what a great day this was! It began bright and early at Beauty Brands on the Plaza and moved to the church from there. Between the ceremony & reception, we hit up the Plaza, The Granfalloon for a couple drinks, the rooftop of the Western Auto building & finally the Quaff back on Union Hill. Whew! From there, we hoped, skipped, and jumped over to the Marriott for the beautiful, antique reception hall. Nicole had the brightest smile all day-- even in the 100+ degree weather on the rooftop! It was a wonderful chance to have lots of fun with the group shots and also the inside of the Muehlebach lent itself to some fabulous black and white shots that we couldn't go without. Barb and Shannon loved every minute of this hot and fun filled Saturday in June.

We photographed some really fantastic moments of Matt & Nicole's parents. We absolutely adore capturing thse precious images of family members enjoying themselves-- especially the parents at their children't fairy-tale wedding.. .

Amber & Troy-- a refresh in pure journalism

Shannon has been our second shooter for a couple years now and we have certainly enjoyed her company and enthusiasm and pasison for photography on our wedding & portrait shoots. She had the oportunity this past month to photograph her first solo wedding and understandable, she was quite nervous. She'd been a portrait photographer for years and years and has been learning the wedding business, but the quick eye and intense knowledge of your equipment make wedding photography a completely different ballgame! Needless to say, Barb agreed to go along with Shannon to be back up and an encourager. The wedding was of Amber & Troy-- a delightful couple expecting their first baby in only two months. Barb met Shannon at the Ritz Charles in Olathe on a sunny Sunday in June and got to play "second shooter". It was so much fun! Since Barb let Shannon take the reins as far as most of the "posed" photoraphy went, she merely followed Shannon around all day and took candids. Here are some images Barb took on that day:

We arrived at Brenna's home the Wednesday before Father's day. Her plan was simple. Somehow get her three rambunctious boys to stay put long enough to get one photograph of them holding the wooden cut-out letters she'd painted for a portrait for Father's Day. We got the photograph she was looking for and of course, Barb couldn't help grabbing a couple other images of the boys in the meantime. . .

The M. Girls' Father's Day Shoot!

Jered grew up with Lauren as she was the sister of one of his best friends. When she became engaged, the first thing she said was, I want Jered to photograph my wedding. So we arrived at Studio 2131 in the Crossroads for their urban wedding. It was a delight! Not just to see old friends again but to be able to capture Lauren & Todd's unique personalities through their choice of venue & photo locations. Jaimee & Nick's River Market Engagement Evening

Where do you go for engagement photos when it's 90+ degrees outside? That was Jaimee's question to us when she mentioned that her and Nick wanted their engagement photos done this month. Why, the answer is simple! Union Station of course! Well, that's one of our favorite places anyway. So we met at Union Station with this delightful couple and from there we traversed down to the Rivermarket area (another one of our favorite places in the city!) It was certainly hot, but Jaimee has such an infectious smile & Nick was one of the most attentive fiances we've seen thus far so end the end, we got some fabulous images!

Brittany & Cody were married on a hot day at the KC Police Academy. They were a delightful couple we had the honor of photographing and filming for their engagement. When we arrived, Brittany looked at Barb and said, "have you seen our video?" She hadn't seen the video that Jered had put together for the couple, but we must say it was quite the distraction while she was trying to take the group photos! "It's hilarious!" Brittany gushed. This no-frills couple was laid back and all about enjoying the day instead of worrying over lots and lots of posed photographs. Our Engagement Story Winners! Candis & Jared

Candis & Jared are a couple of high school sweethearts who are now getting married! Their sweet story won us over during our Engagement Story Contest last spring and they won a free engagement session. We met the couple at Kauffman Gardens for their engagement Photo/Video session a couple weeks ago and they are such a cute couple, we couldn't help but smile the whole time. Candis has such a great and easy laugh and the love and devotion this couple still shares after growing through high school & college together is apparent and beautiful to see. We can't wait till their wedding in the fall!

Brook & Jeff's Highway Themed Wedding

Brook & Jeff are an amazing couple we had the opportunity to meet & photograph last year. They met us at a bridal show and they won our **Free Engagement session**. We met out at Mahaffee Farmstead and the party went from there. They are a fabulous couple who became engaged while driving down the highway.Therefore, their wedding colors were kelly green & white and they had homemade highway sign decorations throughout their reception. It was an amazing time at a beautiful cultural center followed by a party at Jeff's parent's place under a super sized tent! What an amazing couple & a unique wedding.

This next photo was so cute, I just couldn't help myself. Brook had ditched her shoes about half an hour prior to this photo & had been walking around barefoot. So adorable.

There is a story behind these next four photographs. They all begin with someone saying, "Hey, wouldn't it be totally cool if. . ." Let's just say the mark of a good photographer is being able to ask complete strangers the strangest things and also the mark of an amazing bridal party is that they're up for giving some kid $5 so we can borrow his bike for some photographs. . .

We mentioned that the reception was in a tent outside the groom's parent's house, yes? Did we mention it was a vary large, very cool tent?

These invitations were made by Brook. The stamp on the inside of the road leading to a cottage was designed by Brook's grandmother who suddenly passed away just before the wedding. This was Brook's beautiful way of honoring her memory:

Here's the mark of dedication we have here at Artistic Imagery: we heard the tornado sirens sound off this morning but since Jered was in the middle of a picture-video slide-show and Barb was juuuust finishing up editing a wedding. . . we pointedly ignored the blaring sound. In fact, it was only later after an incredulous friend informed us over lunch that she & the entire staff of the Johnson County Central Library were shuttled off to a "safe place" during the storm that we realized we should've been more alarmed. Such is the consuming life of photo editing. Here Barb took a break this afternoon to check on our potted vegetable garden on our balcony. Thankfully, the plants survived the torrent of storms we've had as of late. Here's some photos!

Rosemary & James Wedding extravaganza

How can we describe Rosemary & James's wedding? There were kilts and Renaissance gowns. There was a "flower fairy" and a Spock "ring bear". There were Celtic knots and tables named after sci-fi space crafts and hand held lanterns instead of bouquets. Their cake topper was Bridezilla atop a painstakingly handcrafted Tokyo city (with micro machines!). Above all, it was a close knit group throwing a party for their two best friends who were celebrating their union. It was genuine, it was sweet, it was creative as you can possibly get and it was their very own. Congrats to Rosemary & James!

Pamela & Anthony's Lawrence wedding

Pamela & Anthony were so pleased to be married, there was barely a moment that they were not smiling. Pamela's family came in town for the occasion and there were many a joyful tear shed on this blustery day. Their ceremony was held at a charming castle-like building called the Castle Tea Room. What a unique venue for this unique couple! From their homemade sweets to their jubilant reception party, this was quite the affair!

Rachel and Sheldon: The Wedding!

Rachel & Sheldon were wed on a chilly Saturday afternoon at West Flander's Park. Just putting it out there: we LOVE this park. When we lived in OP, Barb used to jog at this park (Jered would "walk briskly"). This day, however, dawned gloomy and cold. The girls made the best of it and when they arrived, they waited for the ceremony to begin with blankets around their shoulders. It was pretty cute. Here are some images from their wedding day.

The bride & groom had their two daughters as the flower girls. These girls were precious! Couldn't help but take some photos. . .

So, there's really nothing cuter to shoot at a wedding than the kids. Especially kids with cake!

Matt & Erin's Wichita wedding

Matt & Erin are old friends of ours and it was a fine reunion the day of their wedding. We took a day trip to Wichita (read: 6 hours total driving) since the next day was Easter. But the driving was good, seeing old friends was better and getting a chance to record these two was fabulous. They have absolutely no fear of the camera or of kissing with large amounts of people around, so they were a blast to direct & be with. Here are a few images from their spring wedding day.

Doug & Megan

We were contacted by Doug & Megan and we had the pleasure of capturing their Friday evening wedding. It's always a joy when we get to work side by side photographing a wedding. There's something truely special when we get to hear the beauty of a couple's wedding vows and we get to remember our own.
