Dwayne & Wendy

Oct 10th brought us Dwayne & Wendy and their 20th anniversary party. They had a typical wedding complete with Wendy's white dress and dancing and a cupcake tower. What made this so special, though, was that it was small and mostly put together by the couple's chidren and their families. Wendy's daughter was the one who contacted us and put our involvement in motion. All the decorations and intricate details of their fall celebration were made by the family members themselves so we took great care in capturing every detail from the place settings and decorations to the family members themselves. Here's a sample of what we captured.

Courtney & Josh's engagement

"I don't think I've ever kissed this much in front of another person," Josh said during our engagement session with him and his fiancee, Courtney. They both were a little nervous at first when we met with them at Union Station but were charming, delightful people.

It was supposed to rain, but the storm held off and the sun broke out for some after-Station pics at the JC Nichol's Park at the Plaza. We searched for some fall color which was strangely eluding the Plaza for this time of year, but we managed to find a nice tree or two to get what we wanted. And now onto the photos:

Jami's Sr shoot

We had less than an hour for Jami's senior photo shoot and the sun was getting low. We made the most of it, though, up in Basehor, KS. Here's a couple quick images from our shoot that day:

Wedding Photojournalism

We here at Artistic Imagery have long thought of ourselves as "Wedding Photojournalists". This phrase has come into popularity in the past couple years, and for that we're glad. Long has photojournalism been called merely "snap shot photography" relegating the quick eye and affinity for documentation into the ameture realm.

We must say, however, that by the definition given by the Wedding Photojournalist Association (wpja.com) we cannot fully call ourselves staunch wedding photojournalists. For example, in order to join this association, we cannot have any images on our website that use posed photographs, traditional portraiture, detail shots, etc. These are not true journalsim aparently, because they are taking things out of element and posing them for photographs. Okay, that makes sense. But we LOVE taking these kinds of shots too! Some of our favorite images from weddings are the romantic moments we capture during the bride & groom's "portrait time" or all those detail photographs of shoe buckles, cupcake flowers, and hand crafted place seattings.

We will still consider ourselves photojournalists, however, because the mass amount of photographs we take at weddings are defined as "unplanned" and in the moment. When deciding whether to make a photograph of two girls dancing at the reception, or to pull them aside and take a side-by-side portrait, we will always opt for the candid moment. The hands down best pictures from weddings are the ones of tears and laughs and hugs and moments that aren't staged or posed but are genuine, real, and lasting. That is what makes true artisitc imagery.

Rosemary & James's Engagement

The day of Rosemary & James's engagement session started off with a downpour of rain. The shoot was to take place at 5p at Kauffman Gardens and we devised to call each other at 4 and see if the shoot would have to be rescheduled. Well, at 3 it was still raining, at 4 it cleared up and by 5p on the dot, the sun came out and the air warmed up and we had ourselves a fabulous shoot. We finished right as the clouds rolled back in and the chill settled in for the evening. Talk about fabulous timing!

Vince & Bridget

October is shaping up to be our busiest month to date! It has taken us a while to get these posted and there's still so much more to put up here! Whew! But here's a few images from Vince & Bridget's October wedding. The weather was perfect and we hopped outside for some fabulous fall images. Congrats to the Davis family!

The Engagment session of Nicole & Matt

We had a great afternoon for an engagment session last week when Matt & Nicole met us at Kauffman gardens & The Plaza. We had a hard time choosing images to blog, so we just blogged a bunch. We asked Matt & Nicole if they preferred a bunch of images at a few locations or a few images at a bunch of locations. Bunch of locations it was! And boy was Nicole intrepid, walking around the Plaza in heels. Whew.

Enjoy!
